10 C’s of Leadership

During the month of May I had the privilege of speaking on two industry panels and attend an awards dinner for Māori Business Leaders in Aotearoa (New Zealand). Each one was unique in it’s purpose and collectively they explored what it means to lead in this hyper-digital, hyper-transformative and hyper-fastpaced global economy.

Organisations like Westpac Bank and Auckland Savings Bank (ASB) have started to address the diversity gaps in terms of disability, gender and investing in leadership programmes such as Whakaterehia a cross-industry leadership programme for Māori talent.

Bank of New Zealand (BNZ) were the major sponsor of this year’s Māori Business Leader awards alongside University of Auckland. Minister Te Ururoa Flavell spoke passionately about the social and economic development of Aotearoa in the next century.IMG_a8ahlq

International Coach Federation (ICF) also hosted an industry breakfast in partnership with Hawkins and our panel included Yellow, Fonterra, Becca and Māori Women’s Development Inc.

ASB’s panel of leadership industry experts included Jim Mather – CEO of Te Wananga of Aotearoa, Kara Brown – Leadership Development Manager for Fletcher Building Group and Steve Jurkovich – Executive General Manager for ASB.

From each of these events there were key takeaways about the state of leadership in Aotearoa (New Zealand). I was inspired to see two strong women and two humble men win the Māori Business Leader awards. Reflecting on on these three inspiring events I came up with my top 10 C’s of new world leadership. What would you add?

  1. Compassion – how do you take care of your people?
  2. Critical Thinker – how do think on your feet in times of change?
  3. Courage – what makes you courageous?
  4. Coach – how often do you ask versus tell? do you listen to listen or listen to respond?
  5. Creativity – how does creativity turn up in your work and life?
  6. Collaboration – what was the last project you collaborated on?
  7. Chaos / Change – what excites you about chaos and change?
  8. Community focus – how do you give back?
  9. Communicator / Connector – how often are you growing your global network?
  10. Curiosity – if you had 3 questions to ask Barack Obama what would they be?

Let’s work and RISE together as collective leaders to transition into this hyper-century we are moving towards at an unbelievable pace. #weRISEtogether it’s alot more fun!
